Ashley Williams

Law Office of Guillermo Lara, JR. — San Antonio, TX

How did you get your job?

OCS hosted a panel of criminal law attorneys. After the panel, I introduced myself to a criminal defense attorney. We exchanged information and arranged to meet with each other to discuss my desire to become a lawyer. I was hired for a summer internship position. My interview process was completely informal and not as intense as everyone has made it out to be. This experience taught me to loosen up and not be timid when it comes to seeking out opportunities.

How do you think this experience has helped you in your career path?

I have gone back and forth with which kind of attorney I would like to be. However, I rank criminal law high compared to other law fields—I have always had a fascination with criminal law shows, cases, and trials. The internship has helped me with not only deciding what field I desire to work in, but also helping me decide if I truly want to be a lawyer. I have realized I would be happy doing this for the rest of my life, whether it be criminal law or not.

Did your job change in a virtual workplace? How did you interact with your co-workers?

Actually, my internship is not virtual at all. There are only four people who work in the office. We each have our own space—and a can of Lysol. After finishing the semester, in an extremely odd way, I was excited to get out of the house and go to a place where I felt “normal” again.

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned at this job?

The most valuable thing I have learned at this job is my passion for a legal career. Part of the reason I wanted to become a lawyer is the ability to help those who are in need. Sometimes cases and stories can be difficult to handle, but knowing I am going to help so many people throughout my career is motivating. I am excited to see what the rest of my time at St. Mary’s will bring.
