Biography

Jerron Wheeler, J.D., is a scholar and teacher whose work examines the structural barriers that prevent vulnerable families from accessing health care, with a focus on Medicaid, children and public law. His scholarship explores the evolving role of states, agencies and courts in either safeguarding or obstructing the social safety net.

Wheeler joined the St. Mary’s University School of Law in 2026 as an Assistant Professor of Law, where he teaches Health Law and Federal Civil Procedure. He previously served as a Teaching and Research Fellow at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, teaching Health Law and Poverty Law, and as an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Florida Muma College of Business.

His publications include Medicaid’s Broken Promise to Children, 82 Wash. & Lee L. Rev. 1847 (2026), and From Margins to Center: Elevating Voices of Disadvantaged Families in Child Welfare, 26 Marq. Benefits & Soc. Welfare L. Rev. 1 (2025), among other work on poverty law and racial equity.

Before entering academia, Wheeler served as a Staff Attorney at the Florida Health Justice Project, advocating for children and families navigating Medicaid and CHIP. He previously worked as an Assistant Public Defender in Florida’s Fourth Judicial Circuit and practiced business litigation at Foley & Lardner and Hill Ward Henderson. He is a cum laude graduate of the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the UF Journal of Law and Public Policy.

Wheeler recently relocated to San Antonio with his wife and their three children. Outside of teaching and writing, you’ll likely find him watching his beloved Jacksonville Jaguars, playing basketball, or chasing down Pokemon cards with his kids.
