Austin Rucker

EEOC – Dallas, TX

How did you get your job?

My research positions came from asking and being asked by professors I had met with a lot. The EEOC and litigation research positions came through CORE.

What was the most surprising thing you learned at your job?

How many of the tips and tricks I learned from the Westlaw and Lexis reps would help me throughout my day.

What did you like most about your job?

The EEOC would bring in experts. We had lawyers from various parts of the federal government come and speak with us about their job and share their experiences.

How do you think this experience has helped you in your career path?

Well, the Bostock decision was a huge win for the EEOC, and so much of our work is involved in civil rights, which has always been a passion of mine. I remember last year wondering what employment law was. Now I have a start.

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned at this job?

How to present a tough legal decision in clear language.

Did your job change in a virtual workplace? How did you interact with your co-workers?

We interacted entirely via Microsoft Teams and e-mail.
