Nadeen stands behind Judge Torteya in his courtroom

Judicial Intern for US Magistrate Judge Ignacio Torteya, III – United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas – Brownsville

What was the most surprising thing you discovered at your job?

I was fortunate enough to observe a trial that the attorneys at the firm were working on. This experience was eye-opening to me because I was able to see the critical role that a jury plays in a trial. Specifically, how years of work on a case can all get decided in a few days by a group of 12 people who are just seeing the evidence for the first time.

What do you like the most about your job?

I loved when I would get an assignment, research a topic, brief it, and then see my research and writing be used in court. The attorneys would always invite me to observe hearings that I helped work on. This experience showed me how rewarding hard work can be in the legal field.

How do you think this experience has helped you in your career path?

This experience helped me know that litigation is truly what I want to do in the future. The Espinoza Law Firm specializes in work injury, personal injury and worker’s compensation retaliation claims. However, these areas require knowledge from all parts of the law. Because of this, every assignment I was given was completely different, and would require me to use different skills. I enjoyed being constantly challenged and was never bored. This six-week experience made me excited for my career.
