St. Mary’s University School of Law, Office of Career Strategy – San Antonio, TX

How did you get your job?

I applied through the CORE website.

What was the most surprising thing you learned at your job?

I never realized how much work, effort, and time the Office of Career Strategy invested in making sure students have the resources they need to succeed. I was impressed by the value and importance placed on the students’ feedback and needs. Whenever a student requested a resource or asked a question, the office would make it happen. We not only listen to the students but through our actions we demonstrate our care.

What do/did you like most about your job?

What I love most about my job is the passion and zealous dedication behind the members of the office. I enjoy the positive work environment and the sense of teamwork. I look forward to meeting with my coworkers and staff on Fridays to chat and get to know each other. We support each other and offer great feedback to make our ideas a reality. It is evident my boss cares about me as an individual and values the work I put into my projects.

How do you think this experience has helped you in your career path?

This experience has helped me develop networking, teamwork, and professional skills. I have learned more about the legal field and what it has to offer. Through networking opportunities, this job has provided me with the opportunity to work on Pro Bono cases with attorneys in my field of interest. I have also learned more about myself and the “why” behind my actions. I have been motivated to believe in my value and aim for more.

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned at this job?

The most valuable thing I have learned at this job is the importance of passion behind your work and listening to others. My boss and staff members genuinely care about the students they serve. Every project, idea, and day is about how we can help the students succeed. Even during such difficult times, they have proven they will go the extra mile.
