How did you get your job?

By utilizing the CORE job bank provided by the school, I was able to search through different employers who were looking to hire a law clerk for the summer. I eventually found the summer position, which I was the most interested in, this position was with the United States Attorney’s Office of the Western District of Texas at El Paso. On CORE, there was a job description, which informed me of the responsibilities I would have if I were to be hired. I submitted the required application and documents as guided. After applying, I was later notified that I had gotten the position with United States Attorney’s Office of Western District of Texas at El Paso.

What do you like the most about your job?

What I liked most about my summer job was the variety of experiences I was exposed to. Although, I was assigned to the civil division, I had the opportunity to work with the Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in both the criminal and civil divisions. Initially, I conducted legal research on employment discrimination under the Rehabilitation Act with an AUSA in the civil division. Then I was also assigned to helped two AUSAs in the criminal division in their preparation for a trial on an assault on a federal agent. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to watch multiple legal proceedings, which exposed me to various judges and attorneys. During trials, attorneys would advise me on what to look out for and how to respond to various situations an attorney can find himself/herself in. This summer job gave me more than I expected and has reaffirmed my desire to become an attorney.

What is the most valuable thing you learned at this job?

I believe the most valuable thing I learned at my job was that a successful outcome on a case depends not only the hard work of an attorney, but also on the hard work done by his/her team. The attorneys at the office advised me that having a strong paralegal is one of the greatest assets an attorney can have. Also, the attorneys told me that it is your job, as an attorney, to make sure that your support team knows that each one of them plays an important part in handling the case and your success is also their success. Furthermore, a committed support team allows an attorney to fully represented his/her clients to the best of his/her abilities.
