M.Jur. Health Law and Health Care Compliance Law Concentrations

Andre Hampton

Featured Faculty: André Hampton
“At well over $3 billion per year, the health care economy accounts for over 17 percent of the U.S. economy. However, health care is also governed by a complex set of specialized laws and regulations that affect not only health care service providers, but also all employers and all individuals. Our programs exist to develop our students’ capacity to guide health care providers and others in navigating this complex industry.”

As the health care industry has grown and evolved in San Antonio and across the nation, professionals in the field are required to manage an increasing diversity of functions. The industry has seen an increased emphasis on fraud prevention, an expansion of telemedicine and credentialing, as well as antitrust enforcement and health care privacy regulation. Ideal candidates for the 30-credit-hour M.Jur. program’s health compliance law concentration are working in health care sectors that intersect with the law or are looking to pivot into fields in the following areas:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Health care compliance professionals anticipate and remediate actions, policies or procedures that are counter to industry regulations. They not only ensure industry standards and best practices, but also promote ethical conduct. Due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), this area of regulatory compliance has seen significant growth and is projected to sustain growth across the next eight years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Risk Management: The field of risk management in the context of health care encompasses provider liability, institutional liability, notification and apology. This concentration prepares professionals to mediate risk by anticipating liability, protecting employers and maintaining a patient-centered focus for decision-making.
