Carthens is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she graduated with a double major in English and Public Policy Analysis. She earned her law degree cum laude from North Carolina Central University School of Law. As a law student she was a member of the Moot Court Board, Executive Editor of the North Carolina Central Law Journal and participant in the Pro Bono Program.
Following law school, Carthens worked in private practice in the Washington, D.C., area focusing on real estate law, wills and estates law, and business law. In addition to her legal practice background, Carthens has a significant amount of professional experience in higher education. She has served on various academic committees, volunteered as a peer reviewer for the Journal for Excellence in Business Education and taught undergraduate and graduate courses including Introduction to Public Administration, American Government and Business Law and Ethics.
Prior to joining St. Mary’s, Carthens held the position of Academic and Bar Support Skills Instructor at Elon University School of Law. In this position, she provided individualized academic support to law students and instructed them in an introductory legal studies course and bar exam preparation courses.
