Excellence in Education Justice the Law

St. Mary's Law has offered students great value for their legal educational experience since 1927.

J.D. students compete with the best

Students in our advocacy programs are national champions in moot court and mock trial competitions, including the 2016 American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition, the 2016 Federal Bar Association Thurgood A. Marshall Memorial Moot Court Competition and the 2015 William Daniel National Mock Trial Competition. The St. Mary's Law Journal ranks as the top 4.1 percent most-cited law review in federal and state courts nationally and the top 2.1 percent most-cited law review in courts worldwide.

Rich history and culture

As the only law school in San Antonio and one of the few serving south Texas, St. Mary’s Law teaches more than the rules of law. We equip future lawyers with the skills to succeed and the values to lead in a more just world. We are the only Catholic law school in Texas, and our mission is to graduate leaders in the law - advocates with the moral compass to make a difference and a commitment to service. For us, justice counts.

Established in 1927, St. Mary’s Law provides comprehensive opportunities for legal education. We have several Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree options, which allow for concentrated focus on specific legal subjects, as well as degree programs for internationally trained attorneys seeking a better understanding of American and international legal systems. We also offer Texas’ first Master of Jurisprudence (M.Jur.) degree, which educates non-attorney professionals about the legal system.

St. Mary's Law is accredited by both the American Bar Association (ABA) and the American Association of Law Schools (AALS). The School of Law is approved by the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the American Bar Association, 321 North Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60654, 312-988-6738. The School of Law is a member of the International Association of Law Schools and the International Academy of Comparative Law (Académie Internationale de Droit Comparé).

Outreach

Outside the classroom, our students gain hands-on legal experience representing San Antonio’s indigent and disadvantaged citizens. J.D. students act as the attorney of record for clients in need through our Clinical Program housed in the Center for Legal and Social Justice. The Clinical Program includes three courses: the Civil Justice Clinic, the Criminal Justice Clinic, and the Immigration and Human Rights Clinic.

Students may also earn a Pro Bono and Public Service Certificate by volunteering their time through Pro Bono Program. Opportunities to assist disadvantaged individuals with legal issues include working at St. Mary's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site or volunteering with the ID Recovery Project at Haven for Hope, San Antonio’s largest homeless shelter.
